Topography

Topography refers to the shape, height, and depth of the land surface in a place or region. Physical features that make up the topography of an area include mountains, hills, saddles, valleys, gorges, etc. In this lesson, pupils will design and print a 3D relief model for a chosen natural landscape.

Objectives

  • Use a map to explain the relief of an area. 
  • Create a 3D representation of thea relief:  
    • convex: hill, plateau, mountain ridge, saddle, terrace.        
    • concave conditions: valley, depression, gorge, basin, abyss.    
  • ​Determine other characteristics of thea terrain: ridge, valley, slope, foot, slope ridge. 
 

Tools and equipment

  • BE3D EDEE Printer. 
  • Set of example models. 
  • Access to a computer that can access the Internet and TinkerCAD®. 
  • Paper pad and pencil. 
  • Printed lesson resources. 
  • Pictures of contour diagrams of relief shapes (See presentation). 
  • ShapeTourist / topographic maps (at a scale of 1: 50,000). 
  • ShapeSchematic images of relief shapes (See presentation).
 

Skill requirements

To participate in the lesson, students should be able to: 
  • Use TinkerCAD, Fusion 360 or Similar CAD software at an intermediate level
  • Comfortably use DeeControl2 software, including adjusting print settings
  • Use the BE3D EDEE 3D printer
